Words by Sean Irving in response to ‘From Pillar To Post’ Exhibition by Rhys John Kaye at Dust Temple Gallery 2022 -

The seeds of this exhibition started in Seoul, Korea, in 2018, before travelling to several locations on Australia’s east coast throughout lockdowns and accompanying travel bans. Transience informs the work itself, which addresses the perpetual struggle between the pursuit of stability and an innate desire for freedom. This conflict is explored in a series of internal and external dichotomies: peace and chaos, stillness and action, boredom and exhilaration, weakness and strength, pleasure and pain. Signifiers of domesticity feature prominently in these pieces, but their fragility is exposed and laid bare. The structures and objects of a stable, predictable life compete with icons of freedom. The net result of these juxtapositions is an uneasy truce, a sense of striving for a balance that’s left unresolved.

Ultimately, the audience is left with a simple truth: a cracked vase can’t contain the growth of wildflowers.
